We love the time of year when our gardens start to move from early leafy greens to a wider variety of crops. Onions and radishes are coming in, we've harvested some green peppers already (Cubanelle, not hot ones) and there's more to come!
We're also happy to accept donations of produce from local farmers and gardeners. If your tomatoes or zucchini are producing way more than you though they would (those two seem to be the main culprit) we're happy to distribute them to our clients!!
Coming up in August we're hosting the 1st Annual Greener Village Pig Roast as a fundraising event!

Meat is one of the hardest items we have to provide for our client. Huge thank you to Mike's Tree Service for this amazing donation of meat!! The people and business of Fredericton are truly great and we could not do what we do without the support!!
We've been getting some leafy greens from our gardens for the last few weeks and now we're getting peppers!! These ones are sweet peppers but we do have hot peppers as well (a number of our clients like them) and next week Yves plans to smoke and dry some to grind up into our super popular chili powder.
The gardens are going strong and with the rain that we've had and the sun that's coming things should start shooting up even more. This week we had some kale, some chard and some lettuce for our clients to select from.
On the 4th Tuesday (evening) and Thursday (afternoon) of each month we are happy to put on a collective kitchen. Members of the community come together to cook (and clean up) and everyone goes home with eight portions of homemade food. This month included this colorful (and tasty) pico.
Many people don't know that we take pet food as well. For many people pets are their companions and their families and far too often people will go without in order to provide food for their dog or cat.
These are the items that we received as part of the After The Bell program. This is a first for New Brunswick and we're happy to be able to take part in it.
Summer hunger is a very real issue. Most children look forward to summer vacation as a time for fun and rest, but for those living with food insecurity, it can be a time of worry. After the Bell helps fill the gap during the summer months with nutritious food packs for hungry kids," says Chris Hatch, CEO of Food Banks Canada.
As you can see our gardens are coming along amazingly well. Lettuce, Swiss chard, onions, kale. We've already been able to harvest some kale and lettuce for our clients at the Food Bank but we've really only just started!!
This week we had another group from the community complete the Community Food Mentor Program. Community Food Mentors (CFMs) are a province-wide network of certified individuals who share their skills in food and nutrition within their own communities. More information can be found here.
The first harvest of the season from our garden beds!! We are exceptionally happy to be able to grow fresh from the garden produce for our clients at the Food Bank. By necessity much of what we are able to provide is canned goods but once the spring and summer arrive our Garden Coordinator and Seed students put a lot of work into our gardens so we can provide fresh foods!
At the start of the week we were in need of juice boxes for our kids lunch packs. Salesforce came through in a big way with enough juice boxes to carry us through to the end of the school year and to start stocking up for September!!!!
First day of June already!! Seems like not that long ago we were winding down our annual Christmas hamper program and here it is almost summer again.
We were happy once again to have a hand from 4th Artillery with a bunch of work here, including new raised beds to expand our produce capacity!!!
Summer time = summer salads! Our Learning Kitchen put together these salads during the Thursday cooking class. We have these classes/demos every Thursday at 12:30 and they are free for clients and by donation to community members.
These recipes can be found here.
CUPE Local 2745 stopped in this week with a cart full of groceries as well as a generous donation by cheque! Thank you so much.
