UPS has been a long time supporter of the work we do at Greener Village and some of them came in the other day to give us a few hours of their time as volunteers!
We know nobody wants to think of it quite yet but in order to make our Christmas program as successful as it is it means we need to start early. We've begun registering food bank clients for the program, taking the angel requests and writing up the angels for when the Angel Tree goes up at the Regent Mall on November 14th. Our Christmas program provides Christmas dinner to nearly 1000 families in the Fredericton area and over 2600 presents to children!
We need volunteers for both admin work at Greener Village and table work at the mall. Please email email@example.com if you're able to give us a hand this season.
When we get to that time of year when people say what they are thankful for - we are thankful for the continued support from the community. From individual donations to large corporate donations, the people and businesses of Fredericton are what allow us to provide assistance to over 1200 families every month.
We're happy to have the Spark program from George Street School come in Friday mornings to explore cooking in the kitchen with Chef Yves. Today the kids made homemade pizza and pasta salad.

Nice to have people come in from Deloitte as part of their month of giving!! They got a ton (literally) accomplished in the food warehouse and in sorting the incoming donations coming in to the boutique!
A little late as our web person has been using up some vacation time before the busyness of Christmas takes us full throttle. There are some people we really need to thank though - Sunrise Rotary, The Radical Edge, Burger King, Fredericton Food Rescue and more.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in the Beer on the Bridge event!! Sunrise Rotary stopped by at our recent Open House event to present us with this donation!
It's not exactly lemons and lemonade but it is a fair amount of tart, local grapes from a gleaning project that Chef Yves turned into 126 jars of grape jelly that we can then put up as one of our client choice items.

Apologies for the lack of update last week but I was on vacation last Friday!! Never fear though, things are still moving along here at Greener Village.
Every month from September until June we provide lunch snacks for kids ages 5-14, about 700 children. The snack packs are pretty basic - juice boxes, pudding cups/fruit cups and granola bars but we make sure everything is peanut free. All of which needs to be portioned out and bagged up each week.
We're slowly coming to the end of the growing season but we still have tomatoes, carrots and loads of hot peppers (for some reason they did exceptionally well this year). We love seeing the looks on the clients faces when we have produce that was literally still growing that morning for them.
Fredericton Food Rescue went out gleaning today and brought us some of their items. The program usually gives 1/3 of the harvested items to the farmer, 1/3 to us at Greener Village and 1/3 to the volunteers. This is generally produce remaining after the main harvest that would otherwise be wasted.
An amazing donation of bread through the NBAFB. Normally we have day old items and similar but this is fresh 12 grain bread with a date of September 27th! The picture doesn't do it justice as we received 960 loaves of it!!
On top of growing edible produce for our clients and our kitchen we also make sure to plant a number of various flowers and plants for our bee and butterfly friends. Having a variety of plants for our pollinators helps the entire system to produce more.
A huge thank you to York Dental and Midtown Dental for their generous donation!!
Twice a month we host a Collective Kitchen where a group of 5-7 people get together, cook a bunch of food and then everyone goes home with eight portions of the dishes ready for freezing or eating!

Despite the incredibly hot and humid weather we've all been suffering through over the last month (or more), our garden is doing quite well. On top of this we also have a bumper crop of hot peppers and green bell peppers.

After 15 years of service our cargo van was on its last legs. Thanks to a grant through Food Banks Canada and the Walmart Foundation along with the great people at Trius Truck Center we now have this 2018 vehicle!
It was very exciting to be able to host the Maritime Gospel Music Association as they held a benefit concert here on our beautiful property. The backdrop of a thriving community garden was a great place to listen to some music and enjoy a pizza from our wood-fired oven.
We've posted our August classes before, but since we are now officially into August, it felt right to post them again. All our classes are open to the general community. If you see something you'd like to learn, don't hesitate to contact us.
Also, our Meals Made Simple program, which is an extension of our Learning Kitchen, is continuing to be developed. We are standardizing our recipes and will soon be working on the cost associated portion of the program. Come in for a tour to find out more about the program or if you have some free time to devote to it we'd love to chat with you! In the month of July we reached out to individuals, businesses and government groups to talk to them about the challenges Food Banks face in the summer months. Demand doesn't dip nearly as much as the support level does when people go away on holiday. We asked that they bring some Christmas spirit to the month of July. We received some instant response from individuals and now that July is over, some of the business and government groups are bringing in their food drive results.
On the left are some representatives from Department of Finance who not only did a food drive, but also brought in cash to help us out. Thanks for your great work!
On the right are Maggie and Morgan from Enbridge Gas NB. The folks at Enbridge Gas NB challenged their employees to bring in food items by promising to match every $5 worth of food with a $10 donation from the company. Great work, Enbridge Gas NB.

Meat is one of the hardest items we have to provide for our client. Huge thank you to Mike's Tree Service for this amazing donation of meat!! The people and business of Fredericton are truly great and we could not do what we do without the support!!
We've been getting some leafy greens from our gardens for the last few weeks and now we're getting peppers!! These ones are sweet peppers but we do have hot peppers as well (a number of our clients like them) and next week Yves plans to smoke and dry some to grind up into our super popular chili powder.
Had an amazing donation from Holly, a grade 11 student here in Fredericton. As part of an assignment she put together a cookbook of recipes from her family. She donated a copy of it to us for use in our Learning Kitchen and we look forward to trying some of the recipes!
Volunteers from BMO were in all day today helping with a wide variety of tasks. We're happy to have different groups come and volunteer some of their time to help us with getting things ready for our clients and our Boutique customers.
We're happy to be a partner with the Community Food Smart program. Each month $15 gets you a reusable Sobeys bag full of produce. The bags are ordered on the 1st Thursday of the month and ready for pick up on the 2nd Thursday. The best part is that the program is open to anyone in the community!!
