Garden guides – “how to grow on shoestring”
By Greener Village
We’re looking at helping more people grow vegetables and garden within a tight budget this year, so we are going to put up a lead on facebook to our blog so be sure to follow us.
Also, if topics that you would like information on, have not come up please email us –firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll see what we can do.
Gardening for the year starts here in Fredericton in about mid-February but not outside!
SO here we are almost at the end of January and we can start dreaming, and thinking. ….AND PLANNING .
4 questions to ask yourself in the next few weeks
What do I want to eat that I can grow?
What you want to eat will affect what you want to grow. It‘s no good growing escarole and endives if you have NO idea what they are and what you can do with them and really you like peas, carrots and potatoes!
Tip 1: MAKE A LIST of things you can and want to eat or store ( freeze, dry or can) and check off the top 10 that you like .
Based on a survey last year here at GV most people like:
Lettuce, radish, spinach, peas, beet greens, beans, summer and winter squash cucumbers, Swiss chard, carrots, tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, rutabaga.
Tip 2: WATCH : A really good young British gardener who has had his share of problems and is not scared to talk about it is Huw Richards. This was made in 2014 and he’s come a long way since then! Don’t forget UK is a lot warmer than here! Watch this Youtube from him : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koN7PPWcN8U
TIP 3: START COLLECTING – this is a crazy list until you know what it is for – next session:
Newspaper, cardboard tubes (toilet roll and paper towel central rolls), paper coffee cups with lids, roast chicken containers with lids, any other container that is not clear plastic with a lid. You will also need mason jars, rubber bands and paper towel
Happy garden dreaming!
