Apologies for the lack of update last week but I was on vacation last Friday!! Never fear though, things are still moving along here at Greener Village.
Every month from September until June we provide lunch snacks for kids ages 5-14, about 700 children. The snack packs are pretty basic - juice boxes, pudding cups/fruit cups and granola bars but we make sure everything is peanut free. All of which needs to be portioned out and bagged up each week.
We're slowly coming to the end of the growing season but we still have tomatoes, carrots and loads of hot peppers (for some reason they did exceptionally well this year). We love seeing the looks on the clients faces when we have produce that was literally still growing that morning for them.
Fredericton Food Rescue went out gleaning today and brought us some of their items. The program usually gives 1/3 of the harvested items to the farmer, 1/3 to us at Greener Village and 1/3 to the volunteers. This is generally produce remaining after the main harvest that would otherwise be wasted.
An amazing donation of bread through the NBAFB. Normally we have day old items and similar but this is fresh 12 grain bread with a date of September 27th! The picture doesn't do it justice as we received 960 loaves of it!!
After 15 years of service our cargo van was on its last legs. Thanks to a grant through Food Banks Canada and the Walmart Foundation along with the great people at Trius Truck Center we now have this 2018 vehicle!
We love the time of year when our gardens start to move from early leafy greens to a wider variety of crops. Onions and radishes are coming in, we've harvested some green peppers already (Cubanelle, not hot ones) and there's more to come!
We're also happy to accept donations of produce from local farmers and gardeners. If your tomatoes or zucchini are producing way more than you though they would (those two seem to be the main culprit) we're happy to distribute them to our clients!!
Coming up in August we're hosting the 1st Annual Greener Village Pig Roast as a fundraising event!
August 18th from 4pm until 8pm.
Under 5 for free.
Dinner includes - roast pig, corn bread, corn on the cob, salads, dessert and a drink.
Limited tickets go on sale Monday at Greener Village!!
Meat is one of the hardest items we have to provide for our client. Huge thank you to Mike's Tree Service for this amazing donation of meat!! The people and business of Fredericton are truly great and we could not do what we do without the support!!
We've been getting some leafy greens from our gardens for the last few weeks and now we're getting peppers!! These ones are sweet peppers but we do have hot peppers as well (a number of our clients like them) and next week Yves plans to smoke and dry some to grind up into our super popular chili powder.
We're happy to be part of this Retail Food Program, a relatively new partnership between retail stores and local food banks to pass on surplus foods. Locally we receive goods from Walmart, Superstore, Sobeys and Little Caesars as well as smaller or independent retailers like the Vanier Coop, Mike's Bakery and The Chesspiece.
Come down for our third (or fourth...we're not sure) Christmas in July sale! July 9th to 20th in the Unique Boutique.
As you can see our gardens are coming along amazingly well. Lettuce, Swiss chard, onions, kale. We've already been able to harvest some kale and lettuce for our clients at the Food Bank but we've really only just started!!
Had an amazing donation from Holly, a grade 11 student here in Fredericton. As part of an assignment she put together a cookbook of recipes from her family. She donated a copy of it to us for use in our Learning Kitchen and we look forward to trying some of the recipes!
Volunteers from BMO were in all day today helping with a wide variety of tasks. We're happy to have different groups come and volunteer some of their time to help us with getting things ready for our clients and our Boutique customers.
We're happy to be a partner with the Community Food Smart program. Each month $15 gets you a reusable Sobeys bag full of produce. The bags are ordered on the 1st Thursday of the month and ready for pick up on the 2nd Thursday. The best part is that the program is open to anyone in the community!!
Fredericton Food Bank Progress update
Ken Little, President of Fredericton Community Services Inc., provided an update on how plans for Fredericton Food Bank are progressing after 6 months of operation with its new Board of Directors.
“Back in December when the new Board was formed I outlined several key steps that would be undertaken early in 2018 to move Fredericton Food Bank forward under its new governance model. Specifically, we wanted to achieve the following:
CUPE Local 2745 stopped in this week with a cart full of groceries as well as a generous donation by cheque! Thank you so much.
It's been a few months in the making but our new website is now live. The URL is still the same (greenervillage.org) but everything else has been rebuilt from the ground up.
You'll find pages for the different programs we run under the Greener Village Banner - the Fredericton Food Bank, the Unique Boutique thrift store, the Learning Kitchen, Community Gardens and more. We now have an online volunteer form and will be using this blog to keep people informed about upcoming events and opportunities.
We hope you find the website helpful and we appreciate all feedback. You can contact us at email@example.com or via the Contact Us section of the website.
